The National trust car-park, just off the A69 (signposted Plankey Mill). Grid Reference NY 797639. Map
An easy walk along the banks of the River Allen , to Plankey Mill taking in deciduous and coniferous woodland, approx 3 miles.
Leave the car-park at the opposite end to the entrance and follow the river upstream on the right bank. Shortly, cross the suspension bridge which appears after approx. 1/2 mile. Once across, go straight up the steps which are immediately in front of you to join another path, there is a stone marked 'Tarn' with an arrow pointing right, this path zig zags beneath some crags. A 'crossroads' now is met, go straight ahead, again there is a stone marked 'Tarn' - follow the arrow.
Once at the tarn, follow the path to the right around it and proceed to ascend the steps at the end, this path joins with another at the end - turn left and follow it uphill.
There is a bench on the left which reveals a fine view to Ridley Hall through a clearing. Continue along this path, descend a few steps and cross another path, just around the corner is another bench with a view of Allen Banks. The path now descends, where it forks - stay right to descend more steps. Turn left and follow the path down a mixture of path and steps to reach the valley floor. Unfortunately, now - due a to a large rockfall a few years ago - you are advised that further progress is risky and a small wooden fence blocks the way. One option is to return to the suspension bridge crossed earlier and proceed along the right of the bank.
If you do decide to continue along the left bank, cross over the stile which you find shortly and proceed along the river bank path, crossing 3 more stiles to reach an access road. Turn right down here and enter Plankey Mill.
Cross over another suspension bridge and turn right and follow the obvious route back to the car-park.
