Looking down in Blanchland

Start and Finish

Blanchland, just off the B6306. The car-park situated at the end of the village, grid reference NY 964505. Map

Description

A short walk approximately 3-4 miles, taking in moorland and woodland with fantastic views throughout. There are sheep on the moorland stretch, with grouse and rabbits for company too.

The Walk

Leave the car-park and turn left and follow the road, this leads past the small hamlet of Shildon on the right.

The old mine at Shildon

Continue past a large barn, also on the right and follow the track up to Pennypie House.
Here the path turns right to go in front of Pennypie Farm, but turn left before this, through a gate and immediately left again, crossing a plank bridge over the burn to go along the edge of the moor.

Please respect the notices about keeping your dogs on the lead through this section.

The unsurfaced track follows the line of a stone wall on the left, continue over a stile and proceed to the next gate.
Go through this and descend the surfaced road, great views up Derwentdale to the South are to be seen from this point.

Continue down the road into Baybridge, a T-junction, go right past the Baybridge picnic site on your right, and follow a footpath sign, signposted Blanchland, on the left.

This path now follows the River Derwent, crystal clear here due to the stony river bed, and a perfect place for your four legged friend to cool off.

Cooling off

This clear path crosses two ladder stiles before entering the edge of the village green of Blanchland, continue to the road.

Playtime

Turn left and proceed back to the car-park.
