Houghall - Maiden Castle

Start and Finish

Parking

Park near the entrance to Houghall Farm and Garden Centre, just off the A177 at Shincliffe, Durham. There is always parked cars here so it will be obvious where to park. If it looks full, there is space for a couple of cars virtually opposite The Rose Tree pub (the other side of the bridge)

Description

A shortish walk, along a quiet country lane, woodland and open paths and finally along the edge of playing fields.
A very easy walk to follow, perfect for an early morning or early evening Summer stroll.

Start

Either walk up the country lane or immediately enter the woodland with the river on your left until you come to an obvious clearing on the right side, opposite some metal gates.

Turn here

Turn right into this and go straight ahead. After approx 200 yards, turn right at an junction. The path skirts on the right side of a woodland (Great High Wood) with fields to the right of you. Follow the obvious path until to reach the A177.

Road 1Road 2

Cross over this and enter Maiden Castle Wood and again take this easy to follow path all the way to the end.

Cross over the arched bridge over the River Wear (with the Sports Complex to your right), and then take the path going left along the banks of the Wear.

Path

Go over another footbridge and follow the path to an fork.

Footbridge

Go right (the path to the left is closed after some fallen trees have blocked it last year) and walk along the path.

Walled Garden on the left

You will come across a walled garden on your left and to the right is an old railway arch, go through this and follow the path across a small stream using a narrow footbridge. A good drinking place for any dogs here.

Bridge

Once over the bridge, veer diagonally left across the playing fields until you pickup the path on the left bank of the River Wear. Follow this down until it becomes a broad track and reaches the A177 again. Turn right and in about 100 yards, your car will be waiting.
